Even if the typical “Motown sound” was of course strongly influenced by the tasteful brass and string arrangements as well as the unmistakable call & response vocals, it is above all the characteristic grooves of drummers like William “benny” Benjamin, Richard “Pistol“ Allen and Uriel Jones with their magical backbeats, which have forever engraved themselves into our collective musical memories.

“For me, the grooves of this particular era have always had an almost magical depth. The drummers moved very subtly and with great ease between the two timings of straight and shuffled play, which were strictly separated in later genres. Their grooves, which were mainly based on a jazz tradition, were playful, light and positively cheerful, but always unique and with this special quality. If you deal with the subject of groove and the meaning that a beat can have for a song, you quickly realize that the Motown era provided new and indispensable impulses for the further music history, ” says Drummer Sampling- / MIDI-Drummer Norman Garschke.
