Big Bang Orchestra: Fornax Pitched Percussion Ensembles

Piano, percussion & more

  • Unique sounds from 3 concert grand pianos mixed with different percussion instruments

  • Power and energy from up to six percussionists per setup

  • Recorded in 3 positions with a variety of microphones

  • Can be combined to form large percussion ensembles

  • Exceptional surround sound from the large Synchron Stage Vienna

With this unique library VSL is continuously expanding the sound spectrum of their Big Bang Orchestra. For the pitched percussion module, too, they were looking for unusual instrument combinations to create organic-musical and novel sounds.

Since pianos are percussion instruments due to their percussive action, they have included all three large concert grand pianos of the Synchron Stage Vienna. In the recording sessions, the Steinway D-274, the Bösendorfer Imperial and the Yamaha CFX were recorded simultaneously in combination with bell plates, tubular bells, gongs and tuned and untuned drums in order to create bombastic sounds in loud and magical sound universes in quiet dynamics .

Low range and high range ensembles

BBO: Fornax consists of several set-ups in the frequency categories low range and high range. The lower registers are played with combinations of pianos, bell plates, tubular bells, tuned gongs, taikos, timpani and bass drum. So was z. For example, for the “Big Timpani” set, a particularly “big” sound was achieved by expanding the frequency spectrum with taiko and bass drum, with two drum sticks tuned at octave intervals being played with two mallets. The high registers are covered by bell plates, tubular bells, vibraphones, hanging cymbals, gongs and triangles. A special attraction is the combination of these two categories, whereby the entire frequency spectrum can be mapped.

BBO Fornax Recording Session

As with the previous percussion recordings in the Big Bang Orchestra series, up to six percussionists were recorded in the large hall of the Synchron Stage Vienna. By playing together, the musicians automatically coordinate with each other and intuitively adapt their playing style. This ensures that, despite the different types of instruments, a perfect harmony and a homogeneous, independent sound is created.

The instruments were not only recorded with overhead microphones, Decca-Tree and surround setups, but could - although played at the same time - be isolated by close miking in such a way that creative sound processing of the individual instruments in the internal mixer of the synchronous player is possible. Thanks to the consistent recording concept in the Synchron Stage Vienna, the pitched percussion instruments from BBO: Fornax fit seamlessly into the overall sound of the Big Bang Orchestra.

Vienna Instruments and software require a ViennaKey
The USB dongle from eLicenser (Steinberg, formerly Syncrosoft) is not included in the Vienna Instruments, but must be purchased separately. So you have to order at least one ViennaKey together with your first collection. It is automatically placed in the basket with the first instrument, but can be deleted again if you do not need it. Each ViennaKey can store up to 100 product licenses.
You also need an internet connection on any computer to authorize a ViennaKey.
