Ample China Pipa II - a traditional Chinese instrument

Pipa is a traditional plucked instrument of classical Chinese music, it has four strings (AEDA) made of steel, which run over 24 to 30 frets. For the recordings for the library, Ample Sound used a Feng Wie, hand-made by Pipa master Weidong Cao, a detailed replica of a Pipa from the Ming Dynasty.

Ample China Pipa is divided into two versions:

  • Master version (traditional) - recorded by Professor Yin Chen, the Pipa player of the Broadcasting Chinese Orchestra

  • Expert version (modern) - recorded by Lisha Shang, a gifted Pipa virtuoso

The instrument was recorded using two stereo techniques: MS and AB, which can be used to adjust the volume of different microphones in order to achieve a greater variety of sounds. The features include 7 articulations: Sustain, Natural Harmonic, Tremolo, Full Bend, Legato Slide, Hammer-On & Pull-Off & Strum as well as numerous Pipa FX samples.

  • Various functions of the tremolo (tremolo, roll tremolo, shaking tremolo) legato and slide tremolo

  • The recorded tremolo samples have a long fade-in time, which can be divided into 90 different starting points. They can be controlled via the velocity and thus easily adapt to the needs of different situations and styles.

  • The tremolo note can loop itself automatically when the sample reaches the end.

  • Tremolo Switch and Sustain Switch make the switch between articulations smooth. It is also possible to create a realistic conclusion of the tremolo with a fading tremolo release.

  • Advanced Bend, the tone of the bend notes can be changed by a physical modeling system.

  • Legato Smoother: Legato with flexible length and pitch, with polyphonic support.

  • Resonance is an indispensable part of the expressiveness and realism of an acoustic instrument. Ample China Pipa can control the resonance time and volume and simulate more realistic resonances.

  • A lot of game noises are generated in real performance. A virtual instrument would sound unnatural without these noises. Ample China Pipa can not only automatically generate a low fret noise, but can also simulate the subtle sound of the nails touching the string.
