A common question
What do you do when you want to bring your string ensemble closer in for a more direct, punchy sound?
They pull up the faders on the close-up mics, but now it's mainly the lead vocals and a few instruments in the mix that get louder. But you want to hear the full ensemble in more detail without losing its breadth and depth. So you're layering different sample libraries, but their performances don't match, and it's almost impossible to get a result that sounds like a single piece. Wouldn't it be great if two ensembles with different microphones were available in one player at the same time - direct and with reverberation, small and large, crisp and epic wide - but which still play together and phrase synchronously?
A unique solution
Once again, the Vienna Symphonic Library is breaking new ground with a unique library that offers unprecedented possibilities. The Synchron Duality Strings collection includes two string ensembles that were sampled simultaneously in separate rooms of the Synchron Stage Vienna. While the larger ensemble played in the famous Stage A, the smaller ensemble was recorded in the relatively dry Stage B. Both ensembles played together, with the conductor in Stage A also conducting the ensemble in Stage B via video monitors.
Since the musicians could hear each other in both rooms, the musical aspects of all articulations are perfectly coordinated, such as volume, timbre, vibrato, note length and phrasing. Thanks to the size, flexibility and technical possibilities of the Synchron Stage Vienna, a library could be developed with Synchron Duality Strings that other manufacturers can only dream of.
Your own mix
While the mic setup in the large Stage A delivers the broad and successful string sound heard in countless films and TV series, the smaller ensemble in Stage B was recorded with two different mic sets, each bright and offer dark sound variants. This unique approach enabled the head sound engineer of the Synchron Stage Vienna, Bernd Mazagg, to create mixer presets with unprecedented flexibility and creative options, which also serve as ideal starting points for your own mixing ratios.
Due to the differences in the spatial sound, in the ensemble size and in the miking, the two ensembles offer a corresponding contrast. While the larger ensemble has a fuller, more symphonic sound, the smaller ensemble boasts a transparent and clear tonality that gives the larger ensemble a fresh presence. Both ensembles are made up of the best musicians from the Synchron Stage Orchestra, who perform at the highest level.
Extensive gameplay, easily accessible
The articulations include a large selection of short and long tones, different legato variants (regular, agile, slurred, portamento), espressivo with different approaches and endings, as well as pizzicato, col legno, tremolo variants, fast repeats, trills, flageolets, Glissandi, legato and detaché runs and much more. In addition to the usual articulation switching of Synchron Player, there is now also a new category of pre-configured patches that allow you to switch articulations using velocity, e.g. between spiccato and staccato, between different approaches of detachés and long notes, between on - and downward movements of glissandi or runs etc.
This extensive library offers the best of both worlds – a large, ambient-style string ensemble and a dry, chamber-sized ensemble that go perfectly together. However you use Synchron Duality Strings, in combination or individually, this collection delivers great tone with unparalleled flexibility and endless expressive possibilities, from intimate intensity to epic breadth and everything in between.
