Viennese piano making tradition
The Bösendorfer Grand Upright 130 is based on the experience of almost two centuries of grand piano construction. Although its construction is a pianino, it convinces with the fine nuances and the powerful bass of a great piano. Its sound is clear and unadulterated, with no additional colors due to the size of a concert grand.
The legendary, brilliant Bösendorfer timbre is based - following the Viennese piano making tradition - on the complex and elaborate construction principle. Bösendorfer uses more than 80% spruce resonance wood for the construction of an instrument - more than any other manufacturer. The frame was manufactured using the traditional sand casting technique so that it can withstand the almost 20 ton tensile load of the strings. The entire sound body - not just the soundboard - supports the sound formation process and the sound projection, analogous to the sound box of a violin. The precise mechanics offer optimal power transmission with maximum controllability. The bass strings, carefully wound by hand with one or two layers of copper, are a further element for the warm and powerful Bösendorfer sound.
Sampling with the highest precision
In order to capture the Bösendorfer Grand Upright 130 in all of its subtle nuances, our developers have constructed their own, high-precision system that silently transfers all movements to a “robot finger” using a magnet. This micro-controller controls the finger with almost superhuman precision and covers all touch and release curves. The latter map the different speeds when a key is released and each correspond to the previous note length.
8 microphone positions
In order to capture this unique instrument in all its beauty, our sound engineers have used several arrangements with high-quality microphones, which offer a wealth of possibilities for individual sound shaping.
Standard Library:
- Close 1 - capacitor (Schoeps 2 MK4 ORTF)
- Mid 2 (Schoeps KFM6 above the piano)
- Main / Room Mic - Decca Tree Stereo (Neumann KM 133)
- Main / Room Mic - Decca Tree Mono (Neumann KM 133)
Full Library:
- Close 1 - capacitor (Schoeps 2 MK4 ORTF)
- Close 2 - ribbon (Royer SF24 Blumlein)
- Close 3 - capacitor with wide cardioid (Neumann 2 TLM 170)
- Mid 1 (Sennheiser MKH 40 ORTF behind the piano)
- Mid 2 (Schoeps KFM6 above the piano)
- Main / Room Mic - Decca Tree Stereo (Neumann KM 133)
- Main / Room Mic - Decca Tree Mono (Neumann KM 133)
- Main Surround - Stereo (Neumann KM 184)
Even if you do not create a surround mix, you can achieve a more varied sound image with more spatial depth by enriching your stereo mix with the signals from the room microphones contained in the full library.
Individual sound design
In addition to the multitude of sound design options by mixing different microphone signals, the Bösendorfer Upright also contains our specially developed Synchron Pianos software. In addition to a powerful playback engine, the software offers a full-fledged mixer with a variety of effects such as EQ, compressor, saturator, algorithmic reverb, delay, chorus, flanger, rotary and much more. Change the volume of body or string resonances as well as pedal noises directly in the main Play window. In the edit window you can even define EQ settings, volume, mood and dynamic range for each individual key.
