SYNCHRON HULUSI
Synchronous Hulusi - Hulusi in the key of C
The hulusi is a Chinese reed instrument with a wind chamber made from a dried bottle gourd. It originally comes from the Dai-zu or Dai (Thai) people in southern China. The hulusi usually consists of three bamboo pipes - a melody pipe with finger holes and two drone pipes, the accompanying notes of which sound constantly and are often tuned to an octave and a fifth.
The sound of the Hulusi is hauntingly beautiful and relatively quiet. The Dai men played them to express their love for their wives, while other peoples often played the hulusi in the fields during a break from planting or harvesting. The instrument gets its special expressiveness from its vibrato technique.
The hulusi was played by multi-instrumentalist and ethnic instrument expert Veronika Vitazkova, who is also a member of the Synchron Stage Orchestra. She regularly plays concerts with various orchestras, such as the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra and the Lower Austrian Tonkünstler, toured Europe as a solo flautist with Ennio Morricone, and played at the Salzburg Festival and Hollywood in Vienna.
Since she has worked on countless film scores in the Synchron Stage Vienna, she is now very familiar with the large Stage A, whose extraordinary acoustics contribute so significantly to the overall sound of the individual instruments.
In order to capture the instrument with this excellent spatial sound in the best possible way, seven separate, phase-coherent microphone arrangements were used. All microphone signals are available separately in the Synchron Player mixer window. A large number of presets offer perfect mixer settings and serve as a starting point for your own sound creations.
Below you will find the sampled tones of the basic diatonic scale of the Hulusi. Nevertheless, this software instrument also makes all chromatic intermediate tones available to you. Legatos were chromatically sampled. If you would like your composition to be performed by a Hulusi player, please keep in mind that not everything you can play on the keyboard can be used in a live performance.
