MIR 3D RoomPack 2 – Studios & Stages

Teldex Studio Berlin

Built in the 1890s as a ballroom, the famous Teldex Studio recording room has been used as a recording room since the 1950s. The almost alchemical composition of material and surface elements creates a unique and characteristic room signature without resonances or flutter echoes, which is mapped by approx. 6000 impulse responses. In Vienna MIR Pro 3D, the 455 m2 hall can be recorded from two directions using three typical microphone positions.

Recording studio hamlet

The Recording Studio Weiler, formerly known as "Little America" by star producer Peter Wolf (Frank Zappa, Starship, Commodores, Santana, The Who, Earth, Wind & Fire, etc.), was designed by the studio's renowned architects bau:ton, Los Angeles and is one of Austria's top recording studios. 5,300 impulse shots from the two recording rooms were captured. The 170 m² recording room has semi-circular birch panels on its approx. 4 m high ceiling, while the 30 m² "Stone Room" was specially designed for drum recordings. The studio provides the perfect acoustic environment for any kind of rock, pop or jazz production, from re-amping drum tracks to acoustic band recordings.

ORF radio house

MIR 3D RoomPack 2 provides additional reverberation rooms of three studios of the "ORF Funkhaus", the radio building of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation in Vienna, for Vienna MIR Pro 3D. These listed studios were built in the 1930s to plans by legendary architect Clemens Holzmeister. In total, MIR 3D RoomPack 2 contains more than 13,000 impulses, which were directed into the room (as well as towards the floor and ceiling) from up to 50 different positions and recorded with up to four dedicated, multi-channel Ambisonics microphone arrays.

"Big broadcasting hall"

This hall with a reverberation time of 1.5 seconds is a public concert hall on the ground floor of the ORF broadcasting center in Vienna. In addition to a large orchestra stage, which takes up almost half of the room and offers space for even the largest orchestra, it also has a permanently installed organ in the back wall. In the 1950s and 1960s, the hall was mainly used for live radio broadcasts. Even then, remarkably progressive ideas were implemented in relation to the acoustic room concept: for example, there are no parallel walls in the entire hall. The permanently installed leather seats for 230 people, which are still in their original condition, should block out the background noise generated by the audience as much as possible. The number of artists, ensembles and orchestras (including many world-class),

Vienna MIR Pro 3D recreates the unique and vibrant acoustics of this hall from four different main microphone positions: two of them are on the stage, two are in the auditorium.

Studio 2

Although "Studio 2" and "Studio 3" appear almost identical in terms of size on the plan, the two rooms could not be more acoustically different. Since the "Studio 2" in the 1970s was mainly used for loud and "brass-heavy" big band recordings, the room was largely dampened (mainly by ceiling absorbers), which resulted in incredibly "dry" acoustics with a very short reverberation time of 0, resulted in 5 seconds. The "Studio 2" then served the "ORF Big Band" of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation as a recording hall for more than 10 years and is still often booked for contemporary music when a precise tonal and spatial reproduction is important.

In the MIR 3D RoomPack 2, the acoustics of the entire room were captured from three different microphone positions: Two positions regard the room purely as a "stage", while the third position offers the listening perspective of the connected control room, thus creating even more depth.

Studio 3

This recording room is the same size as "Studio 2", but with an average reverberation time of approx. 0.8 seconds. This makes it universally applicable for a variety of instrumentations and musical styles.
