This wonderful salon organ was recorded in the large Stage A of the Synchron Stage Vienna. It is the first time that a historical salon organ has been recorded in a large recording hall, where it can be heard together with large orchestras or small ensembles. Despite its compact design, the Molzer organ with its 25 registers offers a variety of tones, from the muted pianissimo to the majestic fortissimo. The tonal transparency of the Synchron Stage opens up a wide range of applications for this organ, ranging from chamber music and large orchestral works to church music. Even as a solo instrument, the organ can be placed in any acoustic environment with the help of the numerous mixer presets.

The multiplex organ was built by Ferdinand Molzer the Younger in 1938, who at the time was a professor of organ building at the Vienna Academy of Music. It has two manuals and a pedal, as well as labial pipes in a principal row, a flute row and a string row. The 267 pipes made of wood, zinc or organ metal have a length of 10 mm to 2.5 m.

The Molzer organ has a crescendo cylinder, which is part of the basic equipment of the romantic organ. With the help of this foot roller, registers can be switched on step by step from the pianissimo, so that a crescendo that is as smooth as possible up to the tutti can be realized. But there are also four fixed combinations (piano, mezzoforte, forte, tutti), which were personally created by organ builder Franz Eisenhut in coordination with the original circuit.

Synchron Molzer Organ Historic Background

For many years the organ was owned by the pianist and organist Prof. Leopold Marksteiner, one of whose students was Elfriede Jelinek, who later won the Nobel Prize for Literature. The instrument was in his apartment in the Palais Cavriani at Habsburggasse 5 in Vienna's 1st district. It is now part of the collection of old musical instruments in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.

Vienna Organ Player

The specially developed Vienna Organ Player impresses with great flexibility and many options. The registrations of the manuals and the pedal can be easily configured, edited and saved. In addition, the Vienna Organ Player is multi-timbral, so you can assign separate MIDI channels to the manuals and the pedal.

Navigation in the player with its three main views is very simple. COMBINE offers an overview of all registers and their distribution to manuals and pedals, each of which is assigned its own audio channel. The audio configuration with the seven microphone positions can be viewed and edited under MIX. PLAY gives you access to parameters useful for live performance, including crescendo, tremulant, and tremulant speed.

Mixer presets like Close, Classic, Wide, Church, Leslie, Rock Organ and more give you quick access to the sound of your choice, or serve as a starting point for your own sound design.

Please note: A larger number of stops and microphone positions used can lead to a very large number of voices played simultaneously by the player and overload the CPU. We recommend using the preconfigured "Room Mix" presets for live performance and DAW input, and using those presets with multiple microphone channels only for rendering an audio track.

7 microphone positions

In order to capture this unique instrument with all its character, our sound engineers have used several configurations with high-quality microphones that offer a wealth of possibilities for individual sound shaping.
